by Located at one end of the beautiful Lac de Chalain in the Jura region of France, Domaine de Chalain has been a favourite short-stay destination for us on many occasions. Even before owning our own tent, we hired tented and mobile home accommodation here through Canvas Holidays. The site is a comfortable 5hr drive from either Calais or Dunkirk ferry ports using the toll routes for most of the journey or an hour from Geneva Airport across the nearby Swiss border.
This is a busy family-orientated site. The facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a sauna, restaurant, takeaway food outlet, bakery, beach shop, mini-mart, Tennis Courts, Water sports equipment hire, TV and games rooms. In high season entertainment is provided ranging from archery and keep fit classes during the day to music, dancing and stage shows in the evenings. There are plenty of open spaces including the beach and little coves along the lakeside where you can escape and enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the lake.
Pitches are well spaced and can accommodate even the larger Tent, Caravan or Motorhomes. The Toilet Blocks are modern, well equipped, and clean. Washing up facilities are of an equally high standard. An onsite laundrette is also available.
Although not part of the site, we must mention the restaurant Le Pic Vert. located on the left as you turn off the main road in Doucier heading for the site, this is a real gem of an eatery and very well worth a visit. In high season you should book well in advance.
